September Jobs Report

Wed, 10/24/2012 by ftp Staff of FROM THE PORCH

The September Kansas Employment report showed another decrease in unemployment accross the state. In August I noted that the increase in jobs was largely in the government sector, tax payer paid. Not the September report is out. Look at the overview.

If you have trouble reading it, click on it and it will be larger.

Once again the gain is in government and the gain is 3 times August.

I find this interesting and a concern.

Jobs Report Misleading

Sat, 10/13/2012 by ftp Staff of FROM THE PORCH

Editorial: The August labor report seems to be positive, on the surface. Nationally the good news was shared with excitement. In Atchison, the national trend isn't as important as the Kansas Department of Labor information. We to had a decline in unemployment. However, a look at the actual numbers is not as encouraging.

Off Week

I appologize to our readers for the lack on new information last week. I had the privelege of attending a training session at Philmont Scout Range in New Mexico. It was an awesome exprience and I hope that the training will make some difference in the lives of our youth. I appreciate your patience while I was gone.

If the training wasn't enough, the inspiring views are awesome. This picture is the Tooth of Time from the porch of the Villa Philmonte. If the training wasn't enough, the inspiring views are awesome. This picture is the Tooth of Time from the porch of the Villa Philmonte.

January Boring?

The holidays are over and everyone is settling into a general routine. Not much new happens as we wind down from all the celebrations and pay the bills. There is some political news at the national level. The most exciting events are BC and high school basketball games.

2012 HERE WE COME

Sat, 12/31/2011 by Larry Grantham of FROM THE PORCH

Looking back on 2011, we had some really hard times, but we had a lot of good things as well. We have a community that, at least when it was necessary, pulled together. I want to thank Mayor Reavis, Commissioner Werring and County Commissioner Schuele for taking their time to share the positives of last year.

Merry Christmas from THE PORCH

Sat, 12/24/2011 by Larry Grantham of FROM THE PORCH

Once again it is Christmas, the second one for "From the Porch". It is the end of a season that started even before Halloween. Hard to believe that it has been two months of constant bombardment to buy. The talk everywhere is what to get the children, grandchildren, Aunt Mary, or Uncle Jim.

Then there is what am I going to get. It has been two months of how to spend money.

Being Thankful

Wed, 11/23/2011 by Larry Grantham of FROM THE PORCH

Thanksgiving, the traditional day to "give thanks" for the gifts the creator has given us is a special day to most of us. As Americans we have been provided with many advantages. Although we in the Atchison area have had a rough year, we have a lot to be thankful.

From the Porch asked community leaders what they have to be thankful for this year.

Dracula

Review: Dracula at Theatre Atchison

Sat, 09/17/2011 by Dianna Kruger of FROM THE PORCH

Theatre Atchison's presentation of Dracula was quite a surprise to me.  You see, I have never been a fan of Dracula or any other vampire tales, so I wasn't as excited about going to this play as I have been to some others, say a comedy.  If you feel this way too, my advice is to throw those ideas out the window and go!  I was really impressed with the play.
