After three months of flood waters roaring down stream, the river banks have changed. Views along the Kansas bank show a lot of soil went down stream.

Big News, 59 Is Still There

Finally, on September 29th the bridge and 59 highway were opened to trafic at 1:00 PM. The road closed on June 27. The roadway seemed in amazing good condition considering three months under water. The road is narrow with no shoulders. Various structures showed little damage while others are in poor condition. Only one business was open. Pictures tell the story.

 

 

 

 

Atchison Flood Recovery Update

The river level in Atchison is slowly but surely dropping.  Based on the latest forecast, a decision was made by City Staff to remove the river wall.  The process will begin tomorrow (Friday, August 2) and should be completed on Tuesday.

Flood Watch August 31

The end of August marked the first time since June 19th that the river dropped below major flowed stage (27 ft.). August 31 the gage at Atchison read 26.6 feet and is projected to continue dropping. The outflow at Gavin Point Dam was at 92,000 cubic feet per second. No, 59 highway is not dry and there is still a lot of water across the river valley. The numbers tell a story, but pictures make it much more personal.

Although the Missouri River has slow being going down, the rains on Thursday (8/18) and Friday (8/19) are sending it back up.

Trains Running Again

If you haven't noticed, Sunday the trains are running through Atchison again. It is due to the river going down. The railroad has worked on the tracks.

Finally, the river is receding, but slowly.The river was almost 2 1/2 feet below it crest the end of June. It is noticable along River Road as the walks are open and the mud is apparent. The level on the rail road bridge noticably down, however, the valley is still covered in water. The release from Gavin Point has been reduced to 150,000 cfs. The reduction was first initiated Monday and it takes four days for the water to reach Atchison.

It is July 25th and the water is still here. Little has changed over last week. However, over the month the water has spread out over the valley. Pictures tell a better story.

For anyone interested, very little has changed over the past few days. At 7 AM this morning the river stood at 29.45 feet. This is a slight rise from 29.22 feet at 9:30 PM on the 17th. The flow rate at Atchison is 223,000 cubic feet/second. The rate at the Gavin Point Dam is still at 160,000 cubic feet/second. Little change is expected over the next ten days.
